Annual Competitions:
In addition to our Monthly individual stroke play and team tournaments, we hold three annual competitions. To keep "in good standing" with our Club, members are required to compete in at least one tournament per year. Further, to be eligible for awards in the annual competitions, you must play in at least five of our monthly Woodcroft events during our regular season. Standings in all of these competitions are shown in each monthly newsletter. Here is a short description of these competitions followed by a detailed explanation.
-
The Golfer of the Year is based on a "point" system where golfers accrue points in each monthly tournament, based on individual and team performance.
-
The Most Improved Golfer runs from the first monthly WGC event through the last one, and standings are based on reduction in GHIN handicap indexes over this period.
-
The Club Championship is a match-play, double elimination tournament which starts in April with the championship match played by early November. The tournament is set up so you only need to play one round every three to four weeks or so.
Golfer of the Year:
A season long competition based on individual points from our monthly tournaments with points allocated as shown in the table below. Starting in 2023 we are eliminated the team points from contributing and doubling the number for points for each of the finishing places. For ties, GOY points will be assigned by averaging the position points for each tied position. For example, if there is a tie for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place, the awarded GOY points for each player would be (260+230+210) / 3 = 233.33. Points are accumulated over the course of the 10 WGC events but your point total is limited to your top 7 events - whoever gets the most points wins! If you play in one or more of the WGC Myrtle Beach events, that will count as one WGC GOY event. So if you have 4 monthly events and one Myrtle Beach event, the four monthly event Points you earned will be totaled towards the Golfer of the Year competition. Please contact Lenny Walsh if you have any questions. lcwalsh@nc.rr.com

Most Improved Golfer:
A season-long competition to identify the golfer with the most improved handicap from our first event to the last. Each player’s handicap index that is used for our March event is compared to their handicap after our last monthly event (generally in October) using the USGA formula (initial index going into the March event + 12) divided by (the final index after the last monthly event + 12) to calculate an improvement index to three decimal places. Please contact Robby Robinson if you have any questions. (wrobinson108@att.net)
WGC Club Championship:
We can have up to 24 players in this year’s Club Championship in a double elimination format. Last years Club Championship elite 8, should they sign up for this years CC, will get a bye into the second round of the winners bracket. Should one or more of the elite 8 not sign up, the first golfers to sign up will fill those spots. All 16 match play positions in the first round will be filled randomly without regard to their handicap index.
Up to sixteen golfers will play in Round 1 of the championship and the winners move on to play against one of the elite 8 from last year. Should we not have 16 golfers signed up for Round 1, byes will be given to the 1st & 2nd place winners from the prior year's Club Championship results. If any more byes are required, then a random draw between the 3rd/4th place finishers determine the next byes, etc. etc.
Losers of the first round and losers of any match in the winners bracket will move to the losers bracket as indicated by the Losers Bracket pdf.
BOTH the WINNERS and LOSERS Brackets may be found by placing your mouse over the Competitions Tab above and selecting the appropriate tab/file to view or download to your PC.
Match Play Competition:
Each of two golfers on the match schedule will work to schedule and play their match before the dates in the 2023 Club Championship Winner/Loser Bracket documents found above.
In each match you play 18 holes of match play. In match play, as soon as one golfer is ahead by more holes than there are holes left to play, that golfer wins the match. If the match is tied after 18 holes, it is recommended to continue play beginning on hole #1 or from a starting place agreeable to the host course, using the same handicaps as used in the match, until a hole is won. There is no need as in past years to keep track of points, that component of the competition has been eliminate via double elimination.
NOTE: The Final match between the winners of both the winner and losers brackets is FINAL. That means the result of the match is final and if the loser bracket finalists wins the match, they are our 2023 WGC Club Champion. There is NO double elimination in this final match.
In previous years, you could lose once in the round robin phase and still come out to win out to be Club Champion, so you can too in 2023.
The match winner should send an email to the Tournament Director (wrobinson108@att.net) that shows the date of play, the competitors, the course played, the match play score, each player’s points, and any match thoughts or comments that you would like to share for the newsletter.
These matches are pure match play, so as soon as a player is ahead by more holes than remain wins the match. If the match is tied after 18 holes, it is recommended to continue play beginning on No.1 or from a starting place agreeable to the host course using the same handicaps as used during the match. Each match winner then reports the results of the match and any observations or thoughts about the match for the WGC newsletter via email to the Tournament Director (wrobinson108@att.net).

-
Handicap strokes - Prior to the start of the match, the players must consult the GHIN app to determine each player’s handicap index for the day of play and the course handicap strokes for whatever the tees either of you will be playing. If you have any questions about handicap strokes, you should contact the Handicap Committee (lcwalsh@nc.rr.com) and/or the Tournament Director (wrobinson108@att.net). NOTE: once the match starts, the agreed upon strokes are final.
Rules questions - If there is a rules question during a match, the two players should try to agree on the ruling. If you cannot agree, write down the facts of the situation (need agreement on the facts) and play one ball into the hole. After the match contact the tournament director and explain the situation/facts to get the proper ruling. If the rule was properly applied during the match, the posted score counts. If the rule was not properly applied, the appropriate penalty, often the general penalty of loss of hole in match play, will apply and the match result will be updated as necessary. In addition, you should be aware that you have no obligation to call a rule violation on your opponent. On the other hand, if you wish to call a rules violation, you must do it prior to teeing off on the next hole or leaving the last green unless you are made aware of the violation at a later time. NOTE: IF you agree to ignore a rule, both players are disqualified from the club championship.
